Sauna History

In Finland the sweat bath is the sauna, in Russia it is the Banya; almost identical, ritualized steam and sweat baths.

The sweat bath could be as old as the similar ritualized sweat lodges of the First Nations of the Americas such as the "Temazcal" an Aztec sweat bath. These sweat baths carry a long shamanic tradition; it is represented in smoke, and steam bathing, the foundation of sauna culture.

In Estonia the "sauntatuba" is a Christmas Rve steam bath tradition.

The Hamam, or Turkish Bath also uses sweating as a form of cleansing.

The cycle of hot and cold sessions helps to build a strong immunity.
